Boutique businesses join big names in new Wellard shops

June 2014

Anticipation is building at The Village at Wellard, as a new shopping precinct starts to take shape.

Located adjacent to the Wellard Train Station, retailers have been quick to secure a place in the new Wellard Square centre, which will open in November this year.
Anchor tenant Woolworths has committed to a 3,000sqm supermarket that includes a market-feel fresh area, in-store bakery, deli and seafood counter.

This has been a strong drawcard for a range of brand name franchise stores, such as a Priceline Pharmacy and Red Dot, as well as a café, Apollo Health Medical Centre and more.

Local resident Matt Rowse said the community was thrilled to see the new centre forging ahead.

“One of most appealing aspects of Wellard is the fact that most homes are within walking distance of the Village Centre, which is connected to the train station, John Wellard Community Centre and the new shops,” he said.

“Residents are really looking forward to having a great choice of local shopping – it is a big plus for such a young area.”

Wellard Square has attracted a number of boutique retailers including a British fish and chip shop which is a dream come true for chef Doug Holder.

After 30 years in the cooking industry, Doug is importing a custom-built $50,000 fryer from his former UK homeland to give customers an authentic taste experience at Oceans Fish and Chips.

“I’ve been in Australia for five and a half years, and spent four of those working remotely in the mines, so I am really looking forward to doing something different for the 10 years before I retire,” he said.

“I did a lot of homework to find the right location and Wellard has far more potential than some of the other locations, particularly because it is right on the railway line.

“Hopefully all the Poms and Scots will eat with us –and we’ll have to educate the Australians,” he laughed.

The new Wellard Square includes a hairdresser and beauty salon as well as a medical practice and pharmacy.
