Wellard Square opening a Village affair!

November 2014

Thousands of people poured into The Village at Wellard’s brand new shopping precinct – Wellard Square – on Saturday 15 November 2014 to celebrate the official opening!

Sunshine and blue skies provided an ideal backdrop for around 3,000 locals and visitors who enjoyed the fun-filled morning which included a range of activities and entertainment. They were also fuelled by tasty treats from some of Wellard Square’s retailers, plus a delicious sausage sizzle put on by The Village at Wellard Residents Association.

The grand opening festivities included cooking demonstrations by celebrity foodie Anna Gare, spectacular drumming displays by percussion group Sambanistas and live music by Perth band Late Night Astronomers.

The Minister for Housing, Bill Marmion was joined by City of Kwinana Mayor, Carol Adams – and backed by an enthusiastic crowd – as they cut the ceremonial ribbon, officially opening the new retail precinct.

Chairman of The Village at Wellard Residents Association and resident, Alicia Kelly, attended the event with her children Thomas (3) and Liam (2) and said the entertainment was a real hit.

“I think it was a fantastic community event that brought a lot of locals down that hadn’t been to Wellard Square before,” Alicia said.

“It was fabulous how it was all-ages inclusive. The kids could have their faces painted or play with the animals in the petting zoo, but it was also great that the John Wellard Community Centre was able to demonstrate what’s on offer, too. Representatives were able to talk to the community and find out from the locals what other initiatives they would like the Centre to focus on.

“My absolute favourite part of the day was the ribbon cutting because it demonstrated what The Village at Wellard is all about. A lot of times you go to events like these, and it’s a straight ribbon cutting with official people. It wasn’t like that on Saturday; the community got to be involved and I felt that really encompasses what Wellard is all about.”

The Village at Wellard resident and Coulson and Co owner, Michael Coulson, said the event provided a good opportunity for the new retailers to showcase to the community what they have to offer.

“Wellard is a really supportive community and everyone gets behind one another to show support,” Michael said.

“As a resident, I am excited about Wellard Square opening. The community has a ‘hub’ now. We didn’t have anywhere to go for shopping or coffee beforehand, and I think the whole community is really glad that we have this area now.

“I am a member of local Facebook group “Wellard Village chat” and it’s been buzzing with everyone giving positive feedback for the last few weeks.

“The shops opening has also made a difference to the lifestyle, instead of having to use the car to get to the shops, almost everyone can walk down now. It’s great.

“Plus, value-wise, it will do a lot for the area.”

The Wellard Square retail precinct includes a large Woolworths supermarket and 18 specialty stores, including a series of boutique and brand name retailers.
